Talim fights with weapons called "elbow blades," which are essentially modified forms of
tonfa. Tonfa are basically a long shaft that lies on the forearm past the elbow and a short handle to grip. They are usually used in pairs.
Tonfa are said to have originated in Okinawa and are used in Okinawan
kobudo or Ryukyu Kobujutsu
marital arts,
though tonfa have also traditionally been used in various South Asian and Chinese marital arts.
Fun fact! Modern police batons were based on tonfa.
The weapon is said to have derived from the handles on millstones used for grinding rice. These handles were common and easy to accquire, so after the Japanese banned weapons from the islands in the 15th century, they were used as weapons in secret. While most tonfa are made of wood, Talim uses a bladed variety, though she has the option of using a pair of traditional wooden ones.
